Wild Rosehips
Rosehips hold a special place in my story, they've become my number one favorite ingredient for my range of organic botanical skincare and I’ve used them for years to make nourishing teas, immune boosting syrups, and gentle remedies that support overall wellness (they're a powerhouse of vitamin C and antioxidants).
Many moons ago I studied Herbalism down South and travelled down to Central Otago multiple times throughout the year to experience and learn about medicinal plants during different seasons. I'll never forget the time I went down in Autumn only to discover the abundance of wild rosehips growing enmasse on the rolling hillsides. I ended up wild harvesting so many that I had to make a trip to the Wanaka wastebusters to pick up a second hand tramping pack, which I filled to the brim with wild rosehips and checked onto the plane for my return home. It took months to dry so many rosehips and I have vivid memories of the many baskets full of the bright red hips laid out in my caravan / herbden.
Rosehips are now my most cherished ingredient in my organic botanical skincare (and form my best selling moisturiser which I personally could not live without).
Wild Rosehips are easy to forage in late autumn and can be preserved for winter use, making them one of the most practical plants to keep on hand. The hips form after the flower on Roses and even homegrown Roses can be used (just be mindful of sprays).
In my new book Grassroots Herbalism, you'll find a plant profile with useful info on Rosehips, as well as many recipes in which Rosehips can be used.
Rosehips are not just medicine, they’re a way to connect with the seasonal rhythms of the land, enjoy nature’s abundance, and bring color and nourishment to your herbal apothecary.
For anyone wanting to explore practical herbalism, rosehips are a must have plant, and this book makes it easy and inspiring to start using them in your everyday life.
