The Original Copper Thermette is one of those beautifully simple Kiwi inventions that just works, especially when everything else doesn’t.
Invented in 1929 by John A. Hart, it’s also known as a chuffer, Kelly kettle, or Benghazi boiler, but whatever you call it, it’s a reliable way to boil water and cook without needing gas, electricity, or anything fancy.
This is the kind of tool you’ll be grateful for in an emergency. When the power is out, when the kettle won’t boil, or when you’re off-grid and need something dependable, the Thermette steps in. It runs entirely on small sticks and twigs you can gather from your surroundings, so you’re never stuck without fuel.
Its clever cone-shaped design creates a fast, efficient burn, pulling air through like a rocket stove. That means water can boil in around 2 minutes, even in less than ideal conditions. You can also use the top cooking ring to heat a pot or pan at the same time, making it just as useful for a simple hot drink as it is for a full meal.
I love it for camping and time on the land, especially for making wild herbal infusions straight from foraged plants. It’s light enough to carry easily and still performs even when everything is damp or cold.
Simple to use, no fuel to carry, and always ready when you need it. Just add dry twigs, light it, and let it do its thing.
Each order includes:
1 x Solid copper Thermette
1 x Cooking ring (for holding a pot on top)
1 x Galvanized fire ring (base for your fire)
Dimensions:
Height: 38 cm
Weight: 1.7 kg
Water capacity: 2.2 litres
A trusted design that’s been used for decades, even by the New Zealand Army, the Thermette is one of those rare tools that proves its worth over and over again.

Happy to do a review once (or if) it arrives
It's a brilliant little design. I was amazed at how quickly the water boiled.
I also was very pleased with the efficiency of the little cooking ring for cooking my pot of broad beans.
Very happy with my purchase.
it's a very fast and efficient way to heat water when the power goes out. My only issue was finding somewhere out of the wind to light it. it took almost no fuel.
It looks magnificent, it works a treat, a pleasure to own and use. Service great.
We have so much fun using out there're, it's definitely a memory maker.

Boiled in 6 minutes
So simple yet so effective, the gas camping stove is redundant. Touch and go whether it can boil 2L faster than the electric jug too!
